Time to put my money where my mouth is; I’ve been challenged a few times now to show how you can ‘make’ people share knowledge or take part in organisational knowledge and learning (KM) processes – this is building on our past blog, “For KM’s sake, get the people factor right!“.

This is a good post about sharing knowledge with some great comments being shared. This topic is a biggie and has been for a very long time - how do you get people to share knowledge? Society and organizations have not done a great job at promoting the benefits of sharing one's knowledge - in fact - we have almost promoted the opposite, knowledge hoarding.
What everyone needs to understand is that for any individual to be truly valued within an organization or society - you need to share your knowledge. If you keep it too yourself saving it for a rainy day - then the only one that knows how skilled or smart you are is YOU. If you are the only one that knows you have all this great knowledge - how much value do you think is given? I would predict little or none.
One of the best lines I have read regarding knowledge sharing comes from Guy Kawasaki "Poop like an Elephant and Eat like Bird". What Guy means by this is that we need to share more and read/digest less - the more we share the greater our value to those around us. Trust me - I know :-)
What are your thoughts?
